Do you Understand the Difference Between the Terms Spa and Jacuzzi®?

About the Brand

As a leading global wellness company with a legacy spanning more than 65 years, Jacuzzi Group offers premium products, including spas, swim spas, bathtubs, and showers, that bring joy and well-being to people worldwide. We own and market these products under the iconic and globally famous Jacuzzi® brand and trademark. Legendary for performance, reliability, and ease of use, we set the standard by which all spa products are measured.

A Historic Legacy: The Jacuzzi Family Invents At-Home Hydrotherapy, Creating a Wellness Industry

Inventive, hard-working and family-oriented, the Jacuzzi family came to the United States in the early 1900s from Italy. The Jacuzzi brothers started a tradition of innovation in the fields of aviation and agriculture, eventually creating a new industry through home hydrotherapy products.

In the 1940's, Candido Jacuzzi invented a therapeutic hydrotherapy pump to give his young son Kenneth relief from his rheumatoid arthritis. Soon after, Candido and his brothers developed a home version of the pump that turned any normal bathtub into a relaxing and rejuvenating hydro-therapeutic spa. In 1956, the Jacuzzi family began marketing the J-300™ pump and changed the lives of people around the world. In 1968, Jacuzzi created the world’s first integrated jet whirlpool bath, the Roman. The incorporation of therapy jets into the sides of the bathtub was an incredible success. The patented jets produced a unique 50/50 air-to-water ratio and created an unrivaled experience. During the 1980s, Jacuzzi focused on enhancing the home spa experience, introducing models that worked as hot tubs, whirlpool baths, or both. The models incorporated soothing waterfalls and could be installed indoors or outdoors, turning the backyard into a favorite place to Undo®.

Today, Jacuzzi® products are manufactured in 5 countries, enjoyed in more than 100 countries, and are made by a company that employs thousands of people worldwide. Representing decades of innovation, the Jacuzzi® Brand is trusted by millions of customers globally, and the Jacuzzi® trademark is the leading name in spa wellness.

Everyone Else is Pretending

While imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, only 65+ years of innovation can produce designs made to the exacting standards of a Jacuzzi® product. Unfortunately, not every hot tub can be a Jacuzzi® hot tub. Yet, because the Jacuzzi® brand has achieved such massive global brand awareness, people occasionally use “jacuzzi,” our brand name, to describe the product itself. This is incorrect and damages the brand we’ve built over decades. In fact, under the trademark laws of virtually every country, it is trademark infringement to use the word Jacuzzi® to name or describe a hot tub unless Jacuzzi Group is the manufacturer. Simply put, the terms “Jacuzzi®” and “hot tub” or “spa” are not interchangeable.

It is easy to remember the correct way to use the Jacuzzi® trademark. The product – a hot tub, swim spa, sauna, shower, or bathtub – is a noun, a thing. Jacuzzi®, by contrast, is an adjective, that says your hot tub, spa, or sauna is a premium original, from the company that started it all.

So, next time you find yourself referring to a Jacuzzi® product, be sure the Jacuzzi® name does not stand alone. Whether you have a Jacuzzi® hot tub, a Jacuzzi® spa, or a Jacuzzi® bathtub, call your tub like it is – and add the Jacuzzi® brand name with pride. When you refer to any hot tubs or spas that are not manufactured by Jacuzzi Group, don’t use the Jacuzzi® name. The product may not meet the high standards for which Jacuzzi® products are known. It’s not an original.

Thanks for considering something that’s understandably important to us at Jacuzzi. But it’s also important to everyone. The Jacuzzi name is how people seeking premier hydrotherapy products can distinguish them from imitators.

If you are looking for premium wellness products, buy a Jacuzzi® hot tub, spa, swim spa, sauna, shower, or bathtub. Everything else is just hot water.
