Seeking mindfulness can be done in many ways, including meditation, gratitude journaling, and sauna or hot tub use, which will be covered in this article. Read on to learn how these techniques can take you from stressed to serene.

The impact of stress on the mind and body

There are a variety of stressors in modern societies that can affect how we feel, body and mind. According to The American Institute of Stress, “Numerous studies show job stress is a major stressor for American adults and it has escalated progressively during the past few decades. Increased levels of job stress (perceived as having lots of demands but little control) have been associated with increased rates of heart attack, hypertension, and other disorders.”

The impact of stress is on the rise. In an April 2024 report by the Worldwide Independent Network of MR (WIN), which is the world’s leading independent association in market research and polling, 79% of people polled reported “experiencing stress to varying degrees of severity.” Even more alarming, people feeling “most stressed daily are those working full time (82%), and students (83%).”

According to the article “Stress management” on the Mayo Clinic website, “The long-term activation of the stress response system and too much exposure to cortisol and other stress hormones can disrupt almost all the body’s processes.”

The article goes on to state that this puts people at higher risk for a plethora of health problems such as anxiety, depression, digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension and pain; heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke; sleep problems, weight gain and problems in memory and focus.

Stress affects everyone in different ways. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, it’s important to seek out techniques and methods that work best for you. The Mayo Clinic article says that while you may not be able to change your current situation, you can learn to identify what causes you stress and how to take care of yourself in the face of stressful situations.

The article suggests stress management tips such as:

  • Practicing relaxation exercise including yoga, deep breathing, massage, or meditation

  • Eating a healthy diet

  • Getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep

  • Engaging in hobbies you enjoy

  • Fostering healthy friendships

  • Talking with friends and family

  • Seeking professional counseling, if needed

If stress makes you physically tense, combining the aforementioned stress management methods with muscle relaxation techniques may benefit you. These can include hot tub or sauna use. According to an article on the Cleveland Clinic website titled, “Benefits of Hot Tubs,” hot tub use can “boost physical and mental health.”

The article states, “...immersing yourself in hot water could relieve stress and decrease depression symptoms.”

It also supports the fact that hot tub use can help you manage muscle aches and pain.

“A hot tub makes sore, tired muscles feel better because:

  • Heat increases blood flow and helps loosen tense muscles.

  • Buoyancy (floating)) in water takes pressure off joints.

  • Immersing your body in water could help prevent muscle damage from exercise.”

Furthermore, this article lists other benefits of hot tub use. It states: “If you have trouble nodding off at night, a hot tub could help. The muscle-relaxing, mood-boosting effects of hot water can help you soak the day away and prepare you for sleep.”’

Sauna use is also credited for helping to combat stress.

According to an article on the Very Well Health website, “Research suggests that regular sauna use may be linked to a number of health benefits including stress reduction, pain relief, improved circulation and cardiovascular health, and more.”

The article also states that relaxing in a sauna can help relieve muscle soreness. During sauna use, blood vessels relax and dilate, leading to increased blood flow to muscles, joints, and other organs. This “speeds recovery and helps to alleviate soreness,” the article states.

Furthermore, sauna use can have a calming effect. According to the article, this is because “as the body and muscles loosen up, heart rate and blood pressure [temporarily] go down.”

How stress management can improve your life

Managing stress is important for your well-being—mind, body, and soul. The Mayo Clinic says, “There are many rewards for learning to manage stress. For example, you can have peace of mind, fewer stressors and less anxiety, a better quality of life, improvement in conditions such as high blood pressure, better self-control and focus, and better relationships. And it might even lead to a longer, healthier life.”

How to introduce mindfulness into your life

Being mindful of reducing stressors and managing how you handle your stress can improve your life dramatically. But what is mindfulness exactly?

According to the News in Health newsletter from the National Institutes of Health, “Mindfulness is a focus on the present moment. It makes you more aware of what’s going on inside you and around you.” The newsletter lists yoga, meditation, and self-awareness as key mindfulness skills.

In the name of improving your mental state, relaxation, and overall wellness, consider introducing mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to reduce stress and help you relax—both body and mind.

Daily mindful meditation can also enhance your self-awareness, another way to combat stress. An article titled, “Stress relievers: Tips to tame stress,” on the Mayo Clinic website states, “During meditation, you focus your attention and quiet the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace, and balance that can help both your emotional well-being and your overall health. Meditation can empower us to enhance our well-being. You can practice guided meditation, guided imagery, mindfulness, visualization, and other forms of meditation anywhere at any time.”

For example, you can meditate as you sit back, relax, and destress in your hot tub. When you are soaking in solitude, take a few minutes to perform a meditation practice.

Or consider enjoying a sauna session after a yoga class a few times a week. You can also practice meditation while indulging in a warm, relaxing sauna experience.
